Spotlight on OtterVibe

If you attended CSW2016 then you will remember that we had our very own app designed by OtterVibe for our Night of Fashion shows. It allowed our guests to find out what events were going on in the city, follow which brand was on the catwalk and check out our sponsors and exhibitors, and much more. We were keen to find out more about how our app was designed so we grabbed a few minutes with Alexis from OtterVibe.

Alexis is the Sales and Marketing Director at OtterVibe mobile event apps. OtterVibe use their 20+ years of event management experience to help organisers simplify event communications by weaving all their event info together in an easy-to-use, beautiful app. Alexis works with conference and festival organisers to ensure their app is tailor-made to their event and delivered on time. You'll find her most often in pearl and spring colours!

Can an app be developed for any type of event?

An OtterVibe event mobile app can be used for any event that wants to simplify their communications. It brings a number of benefits to both the organiser and the attendee: instant communications, last-minute updates, replacement for printed materials, sponsorship opportunities and accessibility offline.

We see the most take-up from conference and festival organisers who have multiple events or sessions going on at the same time. This is because the most-loved feature of the app is schedule-building, where attendees can favourite talks/performances they’d like to see, then it creates a personalised schedule they can export to their phone calendar for reminders.

How did you decide on the design of the CSWStyle app?

Every element of OtterVibe is designed with the user in mind. We try to keep things simple with the brand’s logo at the top - in this case, Cambridge Style Week - then include a maximum of nine icons to point users to the most important information within the event app. Any more icons than that on the home screen, you run the risk of decision paralysis and feature overload.

With all our clients, the app is bespoke to their brand - so everything from the app icon, to the splash screen, to the home screen is all up to them! This is a key benefit for customers, as it makes their brand - and their whole event - look a lot more innovative, forward-thinking and professional than just using paper.

How long does the process take from start to finish?

For Cambridge Style Week, it was a bit last-minute! We worked with Nicky and the team to get the data into the app, tested and published in the App Store and Google Play in just under five weeks! They had about one week to promote the app. One thing we’d do differently next time is work with Nicky and the team to start the project earlier and help make the most of every opportunity to promote the app.

At OtterVibe, we recommend organisers get their event mobile app as soon as possible. A minimum of six weeks lead time is recommended before an event to ensure there’s enough time to get the app ready and promote it effectively to your audience. The earlier a conference or festival app is released and the better it is promoted, the greater the take-up will be of attendees downloading and using it.

We asked CSW Director Nicky Shepard what she thought of the app.

"It was brilliant to be able to bring another element of technology to our fashion shows with our very own app. It enabled our guests to easily access everything they needed to know about a show. If they spotted something they liked on the catwalk a quick check on the app meant they could find out what store they needed to visit to get their hands on it. I would definitely say it is worthwhile having an app designed if you are planning your own event."
