Newmarket Celebrates 350 Years of Racing History.
This year Newmarket will be celebrating 350 years of horseracing history. Since King Charles II brought racing to the town in 1666 the sport has significantly grown; enough to earn Newmarket the title of The Home of Horseracing.
To celebrate this amazing anniversary Newmarket Racecourses, along with the town, have launched the #WeAre350 campaign. A number of commemorative events have been planned during the racing season, taking place on selected racedays, and other key dates throughout the year.
350th anniversary celebrations officially launched over the bank holiday weekend at the QIPCO Guineas Festival. As well as the world class racing there was an opening ceremony including a speech from Mayor John Berry, a reading of a specially commissioned poem by Henry Birtles and a flyover from Duxford based Spitfires to recognise that racing continued throughout wartime.
Other events include:
There’s even a limited edition Emma Bridgewater mug and a special edition Newmarket Monopoly board which are available from the Palace House website or the National Horseracing Museum shop. We want to know what the equivalent of Park Lane and Mayfair will be. Any guesses?
The winner and runners up from the Best Dressed Competition at last year’s Moët & Chandon Ladies Day
The Moët and Chandon July Festival 7th-9th July is also marked on our calendars. We will be dressing up in our glad rags and making our way to Ladies Day on 7Th July for a day of fashion with some amazing prizes to be won in the new-look fashion event, The Style Awards! There’s a Best Dressed Lady Competition on Ladies Day, Best Dressed Gentleman Competition on the Gentlemen’s Day and a Best Dressed Couple Competition on Saturday. We will be posting blogs nearer the time with some outfit ideas to help you look your best.
After the racing don’t miss the free Après Racing after party with live music, dancing and cocktails. The acts for each day are yet to be announced but if Sara Cox and Tom Parker (The Wanted) who performed at the QIPCO Guineas Festival are anything to go by you won’t want to miss it!
A website has been launched so that you can find out all about the celebrations going on throughout the year. Make sure you head over to weare350.co.uk to find out more and to book tickets visit www.newmarketracecourses.co.uk
