Spotlight on Interior FM

We couldn't wait to unveil our stylish catwalk at our Night of Fashion Shows as keeping its look a secret wasn't easy. We had so many comments on its fabulous design that we just had to grab a few minutes with Architect and Designer Josephine from Interior FM who very kindly answered some burning questions that we had.

Where did the inspiration come from for the catwalk?

I had thought that it would be a rather creative Cambridge thing to do to have an unusual catwalk that would change every year so that each year was recognizable and memorable.

The collection or show was targeting spring and summer and I wanted to celebrate Cambridge park life which is a large part of our city life here in Cambridge, there are many urban retreats within the city and we wanted to convey that getting outdoors feeling, the weather had been dull and grey and we felt that we needed something to lift the show within the beautiful Guildhall.

We started by using the very act that a catwalk is and turned the scenery into a woodland walk, to augment the collection and to create a memorable catwalk for Cambridge Style Week 2016.

How was the design created?

The design was created by the use of unusual materials, we had found carpet tiles, usually for a work environment, that had the appearance of grass and gravel or pebbles, we turned the tiles to face each other to form a gravel path through the grass! This made the catwalk immediately unusual, and comfortable and reliable to walk on!

With the path idea being along the catwalk we wanted to create the perspective of the path coming out of woodland and so using a large format banner we used a photograph of a beautiful path through woodland that lined up with the catwalk path to complete our Urban Retreat theme. The sound and music engineers further added to the scene by starting the show with urban sounds such as traffic and then they faded into woodland or park sounds of birdsong and rustling leaves further adding to the ambience of an Urban Retreat.

Who else was involved?

Interface supplied the carpet tiles in lieu of a sponsorship presence and Vescom supplied the image as a wall covering, Vescom also draped their fabric samples over the backs of the VIP chairs in the two front rows, both of these companies are suppliers to the interior and architecture fraternity within Cambridge and were very proud to be part of Cambridge Style Week. Please look out for another stunning catwalk design from us in 2017!

We can't wait to see what Interior FM come up with for next years show! In the mean time make sure you follow them on Twitter and Facebook, and check out their website.
